Tips for the Perfect Graduation Photo Session in Grand Rapids


Graduation photos in Grand Rapids are a popular choice, and it’s no surprise why. This city is a hard-working, up-and-coming people with a lot to celebrate. Just like you! A grad photoshoot commemorates your journey and makes for sweet memories enjoyed for years to come.


As a Grand Rapids photographer, I work with grads to create stunning portraits in fun shoots showcasing their personalities and accomplishments. Here are my top tips to ensure your graduation photo session is picture-perfect.

1. Choose the Right Season: Timing is Everything


The timing of your graduation session can make or break your photos. Here in Grand Rapids, we’re lucky to experience all four seasons, and each offers something unique for graduation photos:


  • Spring: For vibrant greens, blooming flowers, and perfect temperatures, spring is a go-to for grad sessions. The soft, diffused light of a spring afternoon is ideal for capturing natural beauty. It’s also the most popular since a lot of folks graduate in the spring and want to celebrate in the moment!


  • Summer: Summer sessions boast bold colors and warm, golden light. If your graduation aligns with the summer months, an early morning or late evening session helps avoid harsh sunlight and heat.


  • Fall: Autumn is a favorite for its moody colors and cozy atmosphere. Picture yourself surrounded by the iconic red, orange, and gold leaves on campus---it’s an unbeatable backdrop for grad photos.


  • Winter: Don’t shy away from winter! These sessions can be magical, offering crisp, clean backgrounds that make you stand out. For my GVSU readers, the blue looks great against snowy backgrounds! Pair your outfit with a stylish coat or scarf to embrace the season.

2. Select the Perfect Location for Grad Photos


Grand Rapids is full of awesome photo spots. When choosing a location, think about what represents you and your journey. Here are some ideas:


  • Downtown Grand Rapids: The city is perfect for grads looking for a modern, edgy feel. Landmarks like the Blue Bridge or Calder Plaza are must-visit spots.


  • Welsh Auditorium: I cannot say enough good things about the architecture, texture, and atmosphere of this classic spot. Towering columns and wonderful beige backgrounds bring out any cap and gown, and provide excellent lighting. 


  • Millennium Park: For a mix of natural beauty and scenic trails, Millennium Park offers a relaxed and picturesque setting. And the sunsets are awesome there in summer. 



  • Your School: GV, Calvin, Cornerstone, you name it! Find the spots that meant the most to you during your journey to graduation for photos you can treasure for years to come as you reflect on your time.

3. Dress for Success: What to Wear to a Grad Photoshoot


Your outfit choices are a determining factor in how your grad photos turn out, and how they "feel". Here are some tips to look your best:


  • Cap and Gown: It’s against the law to forget these! Just kidding, but do make sure to bring your cap, gown, and any honors cords or stoles you’ve earned.


  • Dressy Outfit: It's good to pair your cap and gown with a formal or semi-formal outfit underneath for a polished look when the gown comes off. Ladies often prefer a white dress, and for fellas, a suit and tie is always a good choice. See some inspiration below.


  • Accessories: Consider bringing props like your diploma, champagne, or cords you've received from a club, fraternity, or association. Nurses generally bring their stethoscopes and syringes!


  • Color Coordination: Choose colors that complement your skin tone! It helps bring out your face and features better. Solid colors and simple patterns photograph well. Consider the season too. Fall colors or summer greens might impact what colors you go with.

4. Lighting Is Everything


Lighting rules in photography. If there was one thing I could have the best of, it would be light. The “golden hour”—the hour after sunrise or before sunset—offers that soft, warm light that flatters every subject. If golden hour doesn’t fit your schedule, I can help find us shaded areas or position you just right to make the most of the available light.
